AACTA TEAM TENNIS - RULES

July 1, 2010

1. Draft - With following guidelines.
The draft will proceed in two phases. First phase will consist of the first two rounds. Here, every attempt will be made to distribute the better (28) players evenly between the 14 teams. The second phase will consist of the 14 Captains randomly assigned a number between 1 and 14. In the third round, Captains will choose based on their randomly assigned number (1 to 14), fourth round, reverse that order (14 to 1). Continue that process for succeeding rounds until all players are chosen. There are several pairs of players (such as husband and wife) who want to play on the same team. Once one of the pair is chosen, the other of the pair must play for the same team. That is, no other Captain may chose the second player of the pair. However, the original Captain must choose the second player in the appropriate round. That is, the original Captain may not wait until the last round to select the second player of the pair, but must pick the second player in a round based on their skill level. This is also true for the Captain. They must select themselves in a round based on their skill level.
2. Number of Teams - 14. Season starts week of July 12, 2010.
3. Season will run for 8 weeks. (See Schedule).
4. Competition between two teams, defined as an event, will consist of 5 matches, with never more than 2 singles. There would always be 5 matches, but if both Captain's agree, there could be a different mix of singles and doubles, such as one singles and 4 doubles, or all doubles. (Trying to get as many people to play in a scheduled event as possible.) Team with the fewest number of players present determines how many may play. That is, if one team only has 8 players present, and the other team has 10, only 8 from each team will play. If a team has less than 8 players present, then the team will have to forfeit match(s) Unless BOTH* Captains agree otherwise. 7 or 6 players present (forfeit one match). 5 players present (forfeit 2 matches) and so on. (See Rules 9 and 10 about substitutes). (Have one week to complete an event, see rules 11 and 12). [BOTH* Captains can agree to playing 5 matches with more singles. That is, for instance, if one team has 7 players, the 5 matches would consist of 3 singles and 2 doubles.]
5. Prior to each event, each team captain will supply to his opponent a written list of players and positions (first, second singles, first, second, third doubles). These lists can be negotiated (definitely the recommended approach) between the two team captains. Negotiation will allow the Captains to move their players around to try to establish competitive play across all the matches. If unable to negotiate, then, "blind list", based on 2 singles and 3 doubles will be used. After the non-negotiated list is submitted, it may be changed only by the mutual consent of both team captains. Winning Captains (or in case of a tie, the home team captain) will submit the results of the event to the official scorer (Don Fairhead).
6. Singles Players may not play out of order of their "team ranking" (originally, order chosen). That is, if the players chosen in the first and second round are playing singles, player chosen in the first round has to play number 1 singles, player chosen in the second round has to play number 2 singles. Reversing order is not allowed in a "blind list". Captains will inform official scorer, of any changes in "team rankings", at least one week prior to the next event. These changes will be made available to all team captains.
7. Players may not play in more than one match in the same event.
8. To ensure adequate play by all who have signed up to participate in the league, every member of a team must play in at least two of their teams events in a season unless they contact the AACTA Team Tennis Chairman and resign. If a player never shows up for any matches, this is considered resigning.
9. New players desiring entrance into the league after teams have been formed will be placed into a common pool. Team captains will call Don Fairhead, to obtain substitutes only after exhausting all possible team members. (Team Captain's may NOT recruit players for their individual teams during the season.)
10. For the purpose of identifying the next available substitute from the common pool, common pool members will be ordered on a random basis. After all members in the common pool but one has played, a new random order will be formed. Applicants to the common pool will be added to the list of available substitutes only when a new random order is formed.
11. All matches in an event shall be played at the same time, Monday Evenings, 6 P.M (time is flexible, plus or minus ½ hour at least) at one of seven locations - Truxtun Park, Anne Arundel Community College, Annapolis HS, Broakneck HS, Severna Park HS, and South River HS (See Schedule).
12. Rain. When matches have NOT been started, rain date is Thursday following the Monday rained out. Thursday's players may be different than those scheduled for Monday. If so, so be it. Start the negotiating process over again, given that it is a new day. If it rains on Thursday, after a Monday rain-out, that weeks matches will not be played. Season will not be extended.
When matches have been interrupted because of rain, they will be continued from the point at which they were stopped. Date for the continuation of the match is determined by common consent of the players involved, just like in a ladder match. The matches are to be completed before the next scheduled event. That is, complete the matches before the Sunday night following the Monday rain out. If no common date can be agreed to by the players involved, Thursday following the Monday rain out is the default date.
13. A player (or doubles team) wins a match by winning two sets. The twelve point (aka 7 point) tie-breaker will be used to determine the winner of a 6-6 tied set. If all players involved in the match agree at one set apiece, that a third set should be played, then the third set shall be played. If all players involved can NOT agree on the need for a third set, the USTA first to 10, win by 2 tie-breaker, shall be played in lieu of a third set.

14. A total of 5 points will be awarded for each scheduled Event. One (1) point will be awarded to the winner of each of the 5 Line Matches.

15. There will be two divisions (A and B) of 7 teams each. At the end of the 'regular' season (first 7 weeks of play), the team that has won the most points (see Rule 16 about ties) in each Division is the Division winner. In the last week (7), each team will play the corresponding placed team in the other Division. That is, 6th place team in Division A will play the 6th place team in Division B and so on. The Division winners will play for the 'championship'. Trophies will be awarded to the winning team players.

16. In the event of a tie between teams at season end, the tie shall be broken by the first of the following procedures that applies without a tie:

  A. Matches: Winner of the most # of Matches for the season (Won - Lost record).
B. Sets: Least # of sets lost.
C. Games: Winner of the most # of games.
D. Head-to-Head: Winner of the most # of head-to-head matches.
17. Balls provided by "home team". See Schedule.
